Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Surgery, Vol. 1 of 3: General Surgery The object of this work is to give a succinct account of modern surgical pathology, diagnosis, and treatment, and it is intended as a manual for practitioners and students. Much of merely historical interest has been purposely omitted, partly on account of want of space, and partly because a repetition of what is already in print, but now out of date, is undesirable. In a work such as this it must necessarily happen that certain rare conditions can only be treated of briefly; but so far as possible, I have embodied the results of sixteen years' experience as a hospital surgeon and teacher.
