Book excerpt: Gladyy Casely-Hayford, poet, musician, dramatist, painter and story-teller, was born in the Gold Coast (now Ghana) in 1904 and died there in 1950, though she spent most of her life in Freetown, Sierra Leone and became the cultural luminary of her day. Her place in the cultural history of Sierra Leone and even of Ghana seems to have been lost. This book which is an attempt to remedy that situation and tell her life story.
