Book Synopsis Connemara After the Famine by : Thomas Colville Scott

Book excerpt: Only recently discovered, this is a unique and valuable record, kept by Scott, a Scotsman sent by London life insurance employer to report on an estate about to go on sale - 200,000 acres of land north of Galway, Connemara. Called by Scott this inhabited desolation, his journal provides a first-hand account, with line drawings, by Scott, of the survivors of the famine in this area, of the thieving beggars and squalid hostelries, rent-evading tenants, and the works of the 'Papistry.' Robinson supplies very useful background material and history, as well as rich, explanatory notes and a map.
