Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From the Calendar of the Western University and College of London, Ontario: For 1895-96 HE western university and college, of London, Ontario, was established in 1878, by an Act of the Legislature of Ontario, XLI. Vict., Chap. 70, and empowered to confer Degrees in Divinity, Arts, Law, Medicine, Etc, subject to the provisions of paragraph 10 of said Act. The Right Reverend Bishop Hellmuth, l). D., and the Alumni of Huron College were chiefly instrumental in the establishment of the said University the fundamental object of which was to promote the higher scholastic training and instruction of students of Huron College, and also to provide further facilities for higher instruction generally in Arts, Science, Literature, Law, Medicine, and Engineering. This University is open to all who desire to avail themselves of its advantages, without any denominational test whatsoever, except in the case of students in Divinity who may propose to enter the Ministry of the Church of England. The Western University and College commenced its actual work of instruction in October, 1881, with Huron College in affiliation as the Divinity Faculty thereof. The Medical Faculty began work in October, 1882, and has since continued in successful operation. The Arts Department was left in abeyance for a few years, but through the cordial co - operation of the Bishop of Huron and the Council of Huron College, the Senate is now enabled to reopen the Arts Department with encouraging prospects of success. Lectures in Arts will be delivered at Huron College, where there is ample accommodation for large classes.
