Book excerpt: The origin of the Leslies is closely associated with the rise of the royal house of Canmore which ruled Scotland from 1057-1290. When members of the Scottish royalty returned from exile in Hungary in 1058, they were accompanied by a young Hungarian nobleman named Bartholomew. In 1070 he married malcolm III's sister, Beatrix and founded the Clan Leslie which was named after a castle in Garioch in Aberdeenshire. Descendants of Bartholomew include the Earls of Rothes, Levan, Melville and Lords of Lesley, Lindores and Newark. Descendants live throughout the British Isles and Ireland and in other parts of the world.
