Book excerpt: Eric Lovejoy's adventure begins at age 11, during World War II in 1945, with the death of his older brother, Wilbur, during a skirmish outside Budingen, Germany. A quarter of a century later, Eric, now an army chaplain stationed in Budingen, along with two German veterans, an American reporter, and a German-American businessman look into the matter. A bumbling Russian spy lingers in the background. When one of the German veterans reveals a new and dangerous predicament involving his sister, the group focus changes direction in an attempt to rescue her. The trail leads to Adolf Hitler's Obersalzberg fortress in Berchtesgaden, Germany. A series of events and mishaps makes Eric a captive. Eric faces danger and brainwashing at the hands of a secret organization, whose high ideals and harsh methods threaten to destroy his hitherto unexamined religious beliefs. Threatened with death if he does not become a willing member, he struggles to decide whether to join their cause and work on their behalf or try to escape. His choice alters a portion of German history.
