Book excerpt: In this paper, we present a new means of reducing to an integral equation the problem of Cauchy for a linear, hyperbolic, partial differential equation of second order with variable, not necessarily analytic, coefficients. The new method is a relatively direct one, avoids severely singular auxiliary functions, avoids analytic continuation, and is applicable equally to the cases of an even or of an odd number of independent variables without need for "descent."
