Book excerpt: Abstract: This thesis explores the battle for legitimacy and sovereignty between Great Britain and Provincial Massachusetts in the months leading up to the American Revolutionary War. By October 1774, the patriots of Massachusetts usurped Governor Thomas Gage's power limiting his influence to the bottle neck of Boston. The patriots organized a shadow government, and became the legitimate governmental body in the eyes of the people by the dawn of the revolution.
