There were a number of repetitions, misplaced words and phrases, as well as a few incomplete sentences; but these mistakes have been rectified in order to make the meaning clearer. I have not in any case changed the thought, and have tried to make only the corrections that grandfather would make were he and not I editing this work. Through the information given in the manuscript and other data sent me I was enabled to trace the direct descent back to Duncan Clarke, and the Tree there fore contains the record of eight generations, as nearly complete as it could be mad-e. Of the one hundred and forty - nine descendants of Duncan Clarke, eighty - nine are now living, eight of the fifth generation, thirty-three of the sixth, forty-seven of the seventh and one of the eighth.
