Book excerpt: THE EXTRA MAN begins as Louis Ives's career as an English teacher is abruptly curtailed when he is caught wearing a colleague's bra in the staff room. Escaping to New York he moves into a flat share with Henry Harrison, an aging gentleman-about-town who teaches Louis how to operate and survive - scamming opera tickets, obtaining free food - and how to make money escorting wealthy older women around New York.
