Book excerpt: "The South Pacific Program of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is currently working with a partner organizsation in Papua New Guinea, the Research and Conservation Foundation (RCF), to conserve the Crater Mountain Wildlife Management Area, a vast area of virgin tropical forest in the Highlands. TNC's goal in this project is to assist RCF with an assessment, design, and installation of an appropriate biological information management system. In August and September 1995, I visited Papua New Guinea to conduct phase one of this project - assess the information management needs and make recommendations for an appropriate system. With RCF staffer Arlyne Johnson, I visited a number of government and academic offices around the country to determine what information management, GIS, and remote sensing capacity was available within the country. I also visited the Crater Mountain project area to hear and discuss first-hand with RCF staff and other researchers what information needs of the project were and how staff were proposing to gather that information."--Abstract.
