Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Journal of Physiology, Vol. 54: Issued November 1, 1920 The present work was undertaken with the idea Of investigating the effect upon the composition Of the blood Of producing and then main taining for some hours an expansion of the blood volume through the intravenous injection Of a hypertonic crystalloid and colloid in com bined solution, in the hope Of throwing some light on the mechanism of the processes involved The solution injected consisted Of 18 per cent glucose and 25 per cent gum acacia and is the one that has been found useful in the treatment Of traumatic Shock Studies Of the blood changes produced were carried out under conditions which were varied in a way that might change the permeability Of the Vessel walls to the tissue uids and their various constituents.
