Book excerpt: Advanced aerospace applications require combinations of property characteristics which cannot be met by monolithic materials. New materials and processes combined to contribute specific properties offer the most promise for satisfying these requirements. Property evaluation of both material components and final composites is difficult and is a limiting factor in optimizing the design and utilization of such heterogeneous structures. Inorganic bonded refractory fiber-based composites have been developed to meet specific requirements of varied applications. Examples representative of several thermal-structural applications are presented with attention directed to factors considered in the design; for example, thermal, mechanical, and electrical property evaluations as influenced by construction. Difficulties encountered in tests to define and control variables affecting these properties are indicated. Examples of simplified test methods for evaluation of variables of construction are given.
