Book Synopsis Rapport Du Sommet Mondial de L'alimentation by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Book excerpt: World leaders assembled in Rome in November 1996 for the World Food Summit aimed at renewing global commitment to the fight against hunger. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) called the Summit in response to widespread undernutrition and growing concern about the capacity of agriculture to meet future food needs. Part One of the Report presents a summary of the proceedings of the Summit, which took place at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. It also includes the opening and closing statements and Message of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to the Summit; the Reservations and Interpretative statements; and the statements by representatives attending the three Parallel Events which took place during the Summit. It further contains, as an Appendix, the results of the Summit: the Rome Declaration on World Food Security and the World Food Summit Plan of Action, adopted by the Summit at the outset of its proceedings on 13 November. Part Two contains the individual statements delivered by countries, intergovernmental organizations and caucuses of civil society organizations. Also included are special messages from Heads of State or Government as well as the written statements submitted in exercise of the Right of Reply under Rule 20 of the Rules of Procedure.
